HIST 240 - The Medieval World

This course explores the development of medieval Europe following the fall of the Roman empire in the west. Why did feudalism develop and what did it mean for those who ruled, prayed and worked? What did it mean to be a king, a knight, a monk or a serf? How was power constructed and wielded by kings, the church and the people? What impact did the Black Death have on society? What role did faith play in the lives of medieval people? Thease are some of the questions that students will have the opportunity to explore through lecture, discussion and examination of primary sources.
